Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)
In 2 separate studies, anti-HCV antibodies were present in 10% and 19% of ITP patients respectively, although the study found that ITP typically preceded HCV infection.11 The relationship between HCV and ITP has not yet been clarified. Thrombocytopenia can occur because of cirrhosis to the liver, and thrombocytopenia can also result from bone marrow suppression due to the infection itself or to autoantibodies that arise from the infection.12
