People with ITP from HIV
ITP affects approximately 10% of HIV+ patients. However, ITP does not seem to be related to AIDS prognosis. The risk for significant bleeding complications is high in HIV+ hemophiliacs with ITP and platelet count less than 50 x 109/L: in one study, over 80% of such patients suffered an increase in bleeding complications, including frequency and severity of hemarthroses and hematomas, or hemorrhage into the CNS.16 HIV-infected patients generally have platelet counts greater than 20 x 109/L, and thrombocytopenia can sometimes resolve without therapy.17
